What is important to researchers, might not be important to patients. The more we can align researchers and patients on approaches and goals, the better the care and research.

At the Organ Donation and Transplant Research Foundation of BC (ODTRF), we embrace the principles of patient-oriented research (POR), ensuring persons with lived or living experiences of donation and transplantation are engaged as partners in the research process. We value the insights and voices of patients, families, living donors and donor family members (PFD) and require all ODTRF-funded research to meaningfully engage these vital perspectives.
It is through this engagement that critical issues — improving long-term outcomes, enhancing quality of life, and optimizing care — are better addressed, leading to more patient-centered innovations in organ donation and transplant medicine.
Working closely with our investigators, clinician researchers and PFDs we help foster a culture of meaningful engagement in the following ways:
- Support researchers to adopt and integrate a POR approach to their projects
- Offer training and information sessions to build capacity for POR, for both researchers and PFDs
- Connect researchers and PFD partners
- Provide diverse opportunities for interested PFD partners to contribute and shape research
If you are interested in being a PFD partner or a researcher seeking POR support, we would love to hear from you! Email us at newlife@odtrf.org
